Tap Here to Find Price, Date Options & Online Registration Glass Bead Making: Beginners Start Here :Learn the basics of glass bead making during this day-long workshop. Basic skills will be demonstrated and practiced by students such as: basic bead making, using multiple colors, pulling stringers, applying lines and dots, and shaping. We work with Italian glass rods which come in a fabulous range of colors. General safety guidelines and suggestions for home work spaces will be discussed. Each student receives basic start-up equipment and torch -- to keep! (For those people who already own their own equipment, the class fee is $110. We will still provide a selection of glass. To register, use the button shown below... all others, use the button at the top.) You can go home that night and make more beads!! We teach using the HOT HEAD TORCH -- specifically designed for lampworking -- which is economical, straight forward and easy to incorporate into your home environment. Beads will need to cool down slowly... so plan to come in the next time our studio is open to retrieve them. We carry a full line of glass rods, mandrels, bead release, enamels, frits, books and tools for lampworking so you can purchase any additional items you may need the day of class and beyond. We accept *mature* kids, age 12 and up, when they take the class with an adult (ask for our special price) and prior approval by one of our lampworking staff members. (Please schedule 1 week in advance to have your child meet with us prior to registering for this class). Age 16 and up may take the class alone. We do require a signed release for all students regardless of age. Click the button to view class in session and glass items made on a HotHead torch. Class fee covers a selection of glass and the following equipment to keep: 10 mandrels, a HotHead torch, graphite paddle, tweezers, probe, and bead release. (If you've got this equipment, bring it to class. Register for a reduced rate with the Option "own Equipment")
***** There will be a lunch break so bring a sack lunch or plan to visit a local restaurant.

Lampwork: Dots, Twisties & Stringers : IntermediateInstructor: Patty Pulliam During the first portion of this class, students will expand upon the stringers learned in the basic class and move on to twisties. Twisties are stringers which are comprised of two or more colors twisted into a cane. When applied to beads, they create fabulous designs that look complex but are relatively easy to make. We will practice pulling and using basic stringers, then go on to learn silvered ivory stringers, basic twisties, and complex twisties. The second portion of the class focuses on controlling your dot techniques and will include dot placement, basic florals, bubble beads, and various dot distortion patterns.
Students should bring their torch, tools, glass and a new can of gas to class.
There will be a lunch break so bring a sack lunch or plan to visit a local restaurant.
Prerequisite: Beginning Beadmaking or equivalent
|
Lampwork: Inclusions, Tricks & Toys : Intermediate Lampwork SkillsInstructor: Patty Pulliam In this class you will learn how to create beads with various items added to the bead, then encased with clear glass for fabulous effects. Basic encasing is taught and practiced. Some examples of inclusions are silver foil, silver wire, copper mesh, and millifiori. All these techniques require some competency in encasing, therefore encasing practice will take precedence. Later in the class, using frit, pixie dust, enamel powders, copper foil, reduction frit, baking soda and acid etching will be discussed.
Students should bring their torch, tools, glass and a new can of gas to class.
Prerequisite: Beginning Beadmaking or equivalent

Lampwork: Introduction to Duel Fuel Torch Systems : AdvancedInstructor: Patty Pulliam Tried beadmaking on the HotHead and think you may be interested in a dual fuel torch? Before you make the investment, take this 2-hour overview and try out an oxygen/propane torch. Patty will discuss the differences in the torch and fuel, what equipment is needed and how to hook it up, and give you a chance to melt some soft glass on a "Bobcat". Limited to 2 students.
Students should bring their mandrels, tools and glass to class.

Lampwork: Silver Glasses, Metals and More : IntermediateThis class is all about Silver (well, copper too!) There are so many fabulous techniques and cool reactions with foils, wire, and the heavily silvered glasses that we needed to devote an entire class to it's use. While all of these techniques will transfer to a dual system torch, Julie Rose has found some reactions actually work better for her on a HotHead. Students should have already taken our intermediate level classes "Dots and Twisties" and "Inclusions, Tricks & Toys" or have competency in the skills we cover in those classes. Bring your lampwork tools, glass, notebook and a new can of gas to class. Metals, enamel and glass kits are provided through class fee. Suggested reading: Passing the Flame by Corina Tettinger

Glass Fusing Experience : A Fun, Quick Intro to Warm GlassStudents ages 8 and above are introduced to "warm glass" artistry
in the creation of 2(two) multi-layer, fused-glass pendants during this 2 hour
experience. Award winning Artisan, Tammy L Deck will lead the class....guiding
students in glass alchemy, color interactions, cutting and fusing fundamentals.
After the class, the pendants are fired by studio staff in our kiln and
available for pick-up one week after the session.
|
Glass Fusing: Comprehensive Beginners Intro with Kiln OperationInstructor: Tammy Deck Students will get an in-depth introduction to the process of fusing glass during this single session class. This is not a stack and glue or hit and run class. Glass cutting will be taught, glass varieties and COE will be discussed, kiln use will be experienced. Students will be shown how to build their own set of dichroic cabochons (1 pair for earrings and 1 larger for pendant) ready to begin firing by the 30 minute break. After the break, Students will have the opportunity to be involved in the kiln control and watch the full-fuse firing through the viewing window of our kiln. Students will then go on to build and ready for firing, a complex pendant utilizing a resist/stringing channel and newly gained experience of the fusing process. Class projects may be picked-up a few days later Materials and tool use provided through class fee. The cabochons created may be used in metal clay work, beaded over, wire wrapped or bezel set in one of our other classes. Smaller cabochons may simply be glued to earring posts or a pendant bail to create instant jewelry. Or, take our Metals 2 class to learn how to set your cabs in silver!

We're doin' it all on a hothead! An Advanced Lampwork Class for students who are interested in creating florals. Freehand work will be discussed as well as the subtle color shading that makes organic work so beautiful. Demos of leaves and petals and a murrine cane for centers. We'll be working directly into a kiln during this sculptural class. Students once again should bring all their tools, glass (think floral colors...yellow, pink, white, purple and greens for leaves) and a new can of gas.
Is there a technique that seems to be eluding you? Confused why some things aren't flowing....work through your pesky issues with a TLD staff person there to support you. Did we fail to point out that you can get some quality bead making done in time for the holidays. Bring your lampworking equipment and a stash of glass to class. (you likely know the routine by now) Beginners through more advanced are welcome. Please register in advance as we only have 8 spaces available.

Glass Twist by Tammy L Deck
Frit
Faced Fish Pendant and Miniature Blown Vessel by Julie Rose (instructor)
The items shown above were all created using the "Hot Head" torch and skills taught during our lampworking education series (and a bit of practice)
You may be asking yourself.....Will I
always need to stand when I make beads? The answer is no. We start
students out standing with the gas canister and torch supported in a can of sand
for several reasons...
1) The sand acts as an insulator to keep the can from
freezing which causes the pressure in the can to drop and give the impression that you are out of fuel.
2) Students are more likely to heat their glass rods
too quickly during the first class....causing little pieces to pop off. If
you are standing....there's no lap for the hot pieces to fall in.
3)
Students need to learn which posture is most comfortable for their individual
needs....perhaps a counter high stool is more comfortable than sitting on a
normal chair...plan to experiment with different torch and chair
positions. We will help evaluate your needs.
