HATMAKING:  Fiber Fusion Hat Creations

Instructor: Tammy Deck

Learn the art of fiber fusion for the purpose of hat making. Silk and/or Tencel fibers will be layered and bonded into a paper like fabric (that won't melt in water after it's dried) The resulting hats are lightweight, artsy and certainly one-of-a-kind.  The first day is spent preparing our hat blocks, laying out the fiber, applying the medium and sculpting the piece on the blocks.  We allow them to dry over night... so we may do our finishing techniques in the morning.

Basic fiber materials and supplies provided via the class fee. Come to class with basic hand sewing skills, a crown block if you have one (optional) and sewing supplies and trimming option (ribbons, flowers, buttons & beads).
Wear old clothes to 1st class.

Date:  July 14 and 15 2010
Meets: Wednesday,  1 to 5pm & Thursday,  9:30 to Noon
Fee: $185  (all materials included)

HAT MAKING: Felted Silk Brims and Base Fabrics

Instructor:  Tammy Deck

Wool has a natural property that allows it to become felt when treated through agitation, moisture, pressure and heat.  This process uses smaller quantities of wool which is hand worked to encourage the fibers to pass through and bind to Silk Chiffon (referred to as laminating) a lovely, unique and surprisingly durable, drape-able felt can be created.  Our focus will be on hat design work.  Students will explore color and design direction for the application of the wool and play up the unique texture variations.  All materials and equipment will be supplied except crown linings.  No previous felting experience needed.  There is some physical exertion** in this process so, please wear comfortable clothes and shoes to class.  Hat assembly & finishing will be demonstrated allowing students to take their hats as  close to completion as possible.  NO KNITTING,  CROCHETING OR FELTING NEEDLES are used during this process!!

Instructor:  Patty Pulliam

This technique creates a great, contemporary looking rope suitable for necklaces as it is quite supple and strong. Great for a lariat, choker or bracelet, it has a little give to it due to the crochet stitches. Lampworkers love this rope to showcase special beads and pendants. Once finished, you can hardly see the thread!  Students will learn on a gentle spiral pattern which makes it easier to see the stitches.  Other design variations will be discussed.  Students must already be very comfortable with basic crocheting stitches when they take this class (learn how to crochet in our Crochet 1 class).  The materials are simple: size 6 seed beads (size 10 seeds make a finer rope) and #8 crochet cotton thread.  Bring your reading glasses and, if you have them, magnifying glasses to this class since the beads are tiny!

FELTING SKILLS: Beginner Level / Tree Bark Scarf

Instructor:  Tammy L. Deck

Beginner's and seasoned felters are invited to come and play with this fun, unusual process that by-passes knitting and sewing capitalizing on the natural attributes of animal hair to turn yarn and roving into a "holy" fabric.  If you've seen this scarf in the gallery or in Tammy's booth during an art fair, she has it labeled as felt lace... but it's not really the same approach.  Certainly some of the wet steps are similar...if you've already taken the felt lace class... but there's enough of a difference to warrant a separate class. During Tammy's 4+ hour workshop, each student will make their own original scarf.

All materials and equipment supplied.  Dress for comfort... and a bit of a work out (bring snacks if you think you'll need them). Please allow a 1 hour window beyond the stated end time.  NO KNITTING, CROCHETING OR FELTING NEEDLES are used during this process!!

FELTING SKILLS: LAMINATED (NUNO)  FELT

Tammy demonstrated this technique on HGTV show, "That's Clever" back in March '06!!
Instructor:  Tammy L. Deck

Click the button to see examples.

Wool has a natural property that allows it to become felt when treated through agitation, moisture, pressure and heat.  Wool felt is generally thick, stiff and sculptural. By using smaller quantities of wool and encouraging the fibers to pass through and bind to Silk Chiffon (referred to as laminating) a unique and surprisingly durable, drape-able felt can be created. This technique is  applicable to yardages for use in clothing and hat design work.  Students will explore color and design direction for the application of the wool and play up the unique texture variations. A scarf will be created using a provided, hand-painted silk chiffon base, wool & metallic yarns with colored wool roving.

All materials and equipment will be supplied.  No previous felting experience needed. There is some physical exertion** in this process so, please wear comfortable clothes and shoes to class. Some people require additional time for this project, so please, bring a snack and allow for a 1 to 2 hour window beyond the stated end time.  NO KNITTING,  CROCHETING OR FELTING NEEDLES  are used during this process!!

FELTING SKILLS: Felted Silk Collage Shawls

Instructor:  Tammy L. Deck

Wool has a natural property that allows it to become felt when treated through agitation, moisture, pressure and heat.  Wool felt is generally thick, stiff and sculptural. By using smaller quantities of wool and encouraging the fibers to pass through and bind to Silk Chiffon (referred to as laminating or Nuno techniques) a unique and surprisingly durable, drape-able felt can be created. This technique is  applicable to yardages for use in clothing and hat design work.  Students will explore color and design direction for their own collage of fabrics and fibers which result in unique texture variations. A shawl will be created using a provided collection of hand-painted silk gauze and chiffon fabrics together with wool, mohair & metallic yarns and merino wool roving.

All materials and equipment will be supplied.  No previous felting experience needed. There is some physical exertion** in this process so, please wear comfortable clothes and shoes to class and bring a sack lunch.  NO KNITTING,  CROCHETING OR FELTING NEEDLES  are used during this process!!  Students should take our basic Laminated Felt Scarf class prior to this.  The projects are larger so class size is limited to 3 students.

Join this group of multi-media artists as we explore all aspects of the creative process.

The Creativity Continuum is a monthly gathering (3rd Sunday of each month or 3rd Thursday evening of each month) that serves as an arena for artists and creative thinkers to explore, challenge, stretch and share their creative process. Each monthly session opens with sharing of work (show & tell, critique or group input),  creativity warm-up exercises and then progress into creative exploration in various media that are either for the entire group or set in small groups or dyads. The main purpose of these exercises is to have fun and free up everyone’s creative energy. Laura will lead the group in creativity exercises, visualizations, relaxation techniques, artists’ affirmations, readings and discussions. The groups will also serve as a forum for beginning new work and exploring artistic challenges and sharing the results of their efforts with the group. In addition to the monthly meetings, we will offer periodic “artist’s dates” to local art happening and complete the cycle with a gallery exhibit of member's. (a formal presentation of individual and group work from the proceeding year).  Members also have access to creativity continuum blog where they can receive information and participate in on-line interaction between meetings.

Creativity Continuum is for people who want to:

Special Interest Workshop / Photographing Your Work (CC)

Instructor: Roger Legel, Multi-Media Art Instructor the College of DuPage and owner/operator of AfterImage Media.

This class, Photographing Your Artwork, will take a complicated subject and through examples, discussion and hands on demonstrations, provide the working knowledge to create useful, market specific finished images that artists can use to promote, showcase and submit their work through traditional and electronic means. The lessons learned are valuable and specific to the artistic medium you work in, the imaging equipment you may already have and the multiple end-uses that you’ll need to satisfy to showcase your work.

We begin by discussing how to arrange a space with backgrounds, lighting and camera equipment. Then we talk about the specifics of light, framing and camera operation. We’ll actually set up several examples and show you how 2-D and 3-D artwork is shot with various lighting set-ups and a variety of cameras and lenses. At the end of the first session, students will be given assignments to complete by the following week. At that time, critiques, problem solving and answering questions will give each student an opportunity to resolve individual challenges. Information on output formats for traditional and digital media and suggestions on preserving and packaging finished work are addressed in the second session as well. Students should bring their cameras with manuals and accessories to the first class if possible. You can also bring an example of your work to be photographed if you wish.

SEWING / FASHION DESIGN

SEWING SKILLS - Hats & Mittens using Recycled Sweaters / BEGINNER Lvl

See Tammy's article on this technique in "Altered Couture Magazine" Nov '06

Instructor: Tammy Deck

Here's a quick, fun, green sewing project for teens and adults interested in getting started in fashion design and fiber art and artful gift giving.  Each person will learn about "fulling" animal hair sweaters, pattern layout (working around defects), cutting and hand sewing using a "whip" stitch in the creation of one hat (6 of Tammy's patterns to choose from) and one pair of mittens.  Choose from our already prepared stash of recycled sweaters.

Learn about fiber content:  Each student should bring 1 animal hair (75% or higher content of wool, merino, mohair, rabbit hair, angora, or cashmere on the label)  Sweaters should be ready to sacrifice as you will not be using that particular sweater during the class, but rather "recycling" for one of our next classes.   Sweaters with holes and spots absolutely acceptable.

Date: February 18, 2010
Meets: Thursday from 6pm to 9pm
Fee: $45+
