We're sorry you missed this great class.

Instructor: Tammy Deck
Learn the art of fiber fusion for the purpose of hat making. Silk and/or Tencel fibers will be layered and bonded into a paper like fabric (that won't melt in water after it's dried) The resulting hats are lightweight, artsy and certainly one-of-a-kind. The first day is spent preparing our hat blocks, laying out the fiber, applying the medium and sculpting the piece on the blocks. We allow them to dry over night... so we may do our finishing techniques in the morning.
Basic fiber materials and supplies provided via the class fee. Come to class with basic hand
sewing skills, a crown block if you have one (optional) and sewing supplies and trimming
option (ribbons, flowers, buttons & beads).
Wear old clothes to 1st class.

An ancient method of creating fabrics that has become popular again. Learn this fun, unusual process that by-passes spinning and knitting and capitalizes on the natural attributes of animal hair fibers to bond together in the formation of a "non-woven" fabric. During Tammy's 3.5 hour workshop, each student will design and make a flat piece of felt suited to the use of cut and sew designs such as hats, purses, pillow fronts and other accessory items. NO KNITTING, CROCHETING OR FELTING NEEDLES are used during this process!!

Each student will design and make their own felt hoods over a three-dimensional form. This is not a knit and shrink technique! We are exploring traditional wet felting methods using un-spun, loose fiber to create a hat base which allow us to include different surface design elements inlaid within the structure. Learn how to steam, shape and finish your hat over the weekend during your class with Jan Wutkowski (scroll down to register). Prior experience in felt making is needed, please consider taking our Flat Felt Class earlier in the day. NO KNITTING, CROCHETING OR FELTING NEEDLES are used during this process!!

Following the ever-popular European trend for wearing Fascinators, class will be free to interpret their own fun-to-wear headpiece. We will be using many millinery materials including horsehair braid, feathers, flowers, beading, straw and perhaps some found bits as well. Learn to use 'hat securers' to keep these headpieces on your head, as many of these styles are merely perched upon the head. These headpieces are increasingly being worn to weddings, horseracing events, theater and art events, even clubbing. Come find out what all the fuss is about!

Create your own space dyed yarns. This is great for knitters, weavers and art quilters, too. We supply work space and the dye. Bring your yarn or floss in skein form (or pre-measured warps) with a total weight not to exceed 16oz. Yarn should be cotton, rayon, linen, silk (or a natural blend). (***Yarn is also available for purchase through the design center!) Choke ties should be looser so they don't act as a resist when the yarn is wet and swollen. Tammy will explain the basics of working with fiber-reactive dyes at the beginning of each session.
Please indicate which time slot you prefer. You may sign up for more than one session at the PayPal screen.
Students should wear old clothes to class and bring 2 sheets of plastic 18" X 36", a small plastic tub

This technique creates a great, contemporary looking rope suitable for necklaces as it is quite supple and strong. Great for a lariat, choker or bracelet, it has a little give to it due to the crochet stitches. Lampworkers love this rope to showcase special beads and pendants. Once finished, you can hardly see the thread! Students will learn on a gentle spiral pattern which makes it easier to see the stitches. Other design variations will be discussed. Students must already be very comfortable with basic crocheting stitches when they take this class (learn how to crochet in our Crochet 1 class). The materials are simple: size 6 seed beads (size 10 seeds make a finer rope) and #8 crochet cotton thread. Bring your reading glasses and, if you have them, magnifying glasses to this class since the beads are tiny!

If you've seen this scarf in the gallery or in Tammy's booth during an art fair, she has it labeled as felt lace... but it's not really the same approach. Instructor: Roger Legel, Multi-Media Art Instructor the College of DuPage and owner/operator of AfterImage Media.
This class, Photographing Your Artwork, will take a complicated subject and through examples, discussion and hands on demonstrations, provide the working knowledge to create useful, market specific finished images that artists can use to promote, showcase and submit their work through traditional and electronic means. The lessons learned are valuable and specific to the artistic medium you work in, the imaging equipment you may already have and the multiple end-uses that you’ll need to satisfy to showcase your work.
We begin by discussing how to arrange a space with backgrounds, lighting and camera equipment. Then we talk about the specifics of light, framing and camera operation. We’ll actually set up several examples and show you how 2-D and 3-D artwork is shot with various lighting set-ups and a variety of cameras and lenses. At the end of the first session, students will be given assignments to complete by the following week. At that time, critiques, problem solving and answering questions will give each student an opportunity to resolve individual challenges. Information on output formats for traditional and digital media and suggestions on preserving and packaging finished work are addressed in the second session as well. Students should bring their cameras with manuals and accessories to the first class if possible. You can also bring an example of your work to be photographed if you wish.

During this 2 session class, students will create a charming amulet necklace using all those odds and end yarns you've got stashed (and some of ours). The majority of the weaving will be homework that night. Bring the woven pouch to Class II, to learn how to line the purse, several strap options and go on to trim the piece with beads, buttons and charms. No previous weaving experience is needed.
