Learn the basics of glass bead making during this day-long workshop. Basic skills will be demonstrated and practiced by students such as: basic bead making, using multiple colors, pulling stringers, applying lines and dots, and shaping. We work with Italian glass rods which come in a fabulous range of colors. General safety guidelines and suggestions for home work spaces will be discussed.
Each student receives basic start-up equipment and torch head -- to keep!** You can go home that night and make more beads!! We teach using the HOT HEAD TORCH -- specifically designed for lampworking -- which is economical, straight forward and easy to incorporate into your home environment. Beads will need to cool down slowly... so plan to come in the next time our studio is open to retrieve them.
Suggested reading: Making Glass Beads by Cindy Jenkins and The Complete Book of Glass Beadmaking by Kimberly Adams. We carry a full line of glass rods, enamels, frits, books and tools for lampworking so you can purchase any additional items you may need.
** For those people who already own their own equipment, the class fee is $100. We will still provide a selection of glass. To register, use the button shown below... all others, use the button at the top.
We accept *mature* kids, age 12 and up, when they take the class with an adult (ask for our special price) and prior approval by one of our lampworking staff members. (Please schedule 1 week in advance to have your child meet with us prior to registering for this class). Age 16 and up may take the class alone. We do require a signed release for all students regardless of age.
Click the button to view class in session and glass items made on a HotHead torch.
Class fee covers a selection of glass and the following equipment to keep: 10 Mandrels, a HotHead torch, graphite paddle, tweezers, probe, and bead release. (If you've got this equipment, bring it to class. Use the registration button shown below.)
**All students need to bring a 1 lb can of brazing fuel (not propane... available at Home Depot and Ace Hardware sold in a bright yellow can near the pipe fitting torches), a large metal cookie sheet (or other flame proof surface) and a x-large coffee can (or similar sized container) full of sand.
Bring a sack lunch or plan to visit a local restaurant.

Got Questions?
Mark your calendars! Meet with us on the second Thursday of every month to practice your lampworking skills. This is a great opportunity to get together to make beads -- like we need an excuse! -- and to reinforce skills learned in your classes. All lampworkers are welcome -- provided that you have learned skills covered in our beginner beadmaking class. A Coach will be on hand to trouble shoot and demo as needed. Open to anyone who has their own equipment and tank of gas. Although you do not have to come right at 6 and you don't have to stay until 9, we do ask that you register 48 hours in advance, as we can only accommodate 8 torches. If you'd like to try out a dual system torch... please request ahead (additional $15 fee applies to use exclusively during this session)

During the first portion of this class, students will expand upon the stringers learned in the basic class and move on to twisties. Twisties are stringers which are comprised of two or more glass rods twisted into a cane. When applied to beads, they create fabulous designs that look complex but are relatively easy to make. We will practice pulling and using basic stringers, then go on to learn silvered ivory stringers, basic twisties, complex twisties, and encasing with stringers. The second portion of the class focuses on controlling your dot techniques and will include dot placement, basic florals, bubble beads, and various dot distortion patterns.
Students should bring all tools and glass from the first class and a new can of gas. Students should bring their tools, glass and a new can of gas to class. As always, glass and tools are available for purchase in the studio.
There will be a couple of breaks including a lunch break.

In this class you will learn how to create beads with various items added to the bead, then encased with clear glass for fabulous effects. Basic encasing is taught and practiced. Some examples of inclusions are silver foil, silver wire, copper mesh, and millifiori. All these techniques require some competency in encasing, therefore encasing practice will take precedence. Later in the class, students will sample a variety of powders, frits and toys that create different effects on the glass. You will review using frit and then try out pixie dust, enamel powders, copper foil, reduction frit, baking soda and acid etching, as well as play with various toys that create interesting textured beads.
Students should bring their tools, glass and a new can of gas to class. As always, glass and tools are available for purchase in the studio.

Learn the secrets to making perfect hollow bead. Start with the basics of making disks, and proceed to connect the disks to form a hollow. Different styles will be explored as well as how the hollow form can be manipulated and reshaped. Blowing techniques are introduced that will come in handy for the Miniature Blown Vessels class. Additionally, we will make glass shards and explore ways of applying them to your work.

Students should be very experienced using their Hot Head. If you are in
any doubt about your skill level, please attend the Hollow Beads and Intro to
blowing class and/or attend one of our Lamp-Lite Sessions --
Second Thursday of the month -- to have "the Coach" assess your
skill level. (Scroll up for info on Lamp-Lite Night). You know the drill by

This class is all about Silver (well, copper too!) There are so many fabulous techniques and cool reactions with foils, wire, and the heavily silvered glasses that we needed to devote an entire class to it's use. While all of these techniques will transfer to a dual system torch, Julie Rose has found some reactions actual work better for her on a HotHead. Students should have already taken our intermediate level classes "Dots and Twisties" and "Inclusions, Tricks & Toys" or have competency in the skills we cover in those classes.
Bring your lampwork tools, glass, notebook and a new can of gas to class. Metals, enamel and glass kits are provided through class fee.

Students will get a great introduction to the process of fusing glass during this 1 session class. Glass cutting will be taught, glass varieties and COE will be discussed, kiln use will be covered. Students will be shown how to build their own set of dichroic cabochons (1 pair for earrings and 1 larger for pendant) ready to begin firing by the 30 minute break. Students will have the opportunity to be involved in the kiln control and watch the full-fuse firing through the viewing window of our kiln. After the break, students will build a larger, pendant piece which will include a resist to create a horizontal stringing channel ready to be fired at by the end of class (all fused pieces may be picked up the Wednesday after class).
Materials and tool use provided through class fee. The cabochons created may be used in metal clay work, beaded over, wire wrapped or bezel set in one of our other classes. Smaller cabochons may simply be glued to earring posts or a pendant bail to create instant jewelry. Or, take our Metals 2 class to learn how to set your cabs in silver!

Glass Twist by Tammy L Deck
Frit
Faced Fish Pendant and Miniature Blown Vessel by Julie Rose (instructor)
The items shown above were all created using the "Hot Head" torch and skills taught during our lampworking education series (and a bit of practice)
You may be asking yourself.....Will I
always need to stand when I make beads? The answer is no. We start
students out standing with the gas canister and torch supported in a can of sand
for several reasons...
1) The sand acts as an insulator to keep the can from
freezing which causes the pressure in the can to drop and give the impression that you are out of fuel.
2) Students are more likely to heat their glass rods
too quickly during the first class....causing little pieces to pop off. If
you are standing....there's no lap for the hot pieces to fall in.
3)
Students need to learn which posture is most comfortable for their individual
needs....perhaps a counter high stool is more comfortable than sitting on a
normal chair...plan to experiment with different torch and chair
positions. We will help evaluate your needs.
