Silk (Nuno) Laminated Felt Gauze Scarf Instructor: Tammy L. Deck
Wool has a natural property that allows it to become felt when treated through agitation, moisture, pressure and heat. Wool felt is generally thick, stiff and sculptural. By using smaller quantities of wool and encouraging the fibers to pass through and bind to Silk Chiffon (referred to as laminating) a unique and surprisingly durable, drape-able felt can be created. This technique is applicable to yardages for use in clothing and hat design work. During this 4-hour class students will explore color and design direction for the application of the wool and play up the unique texture variations. A scarf will be created using a provided, hand-painted silk chiffon base, wool & metallic yarns with colored wool roving. NO KNITTING, CROCHETING OR FELTING NEEDLES are used during this process!! All materials and equipment supplied. No previous felting experience needed. There is some physical exertion** in this process so, please wear comfortable clothes and shoes to class. Some people require additional time for this project, so please bring a snack and allow for a 1 to 2 hour window beyond the stated end time. **Message from a student: "By the way, you should also market the classes as "body sculpting and toning" - I feel like I spent a day in the gym! (A good feeling!)"

SOAP MAKING FROM SCRATCH / COLD PROCESS / VEGAN RECIPE Learn the craft of cold process soap making (from scratch... not melt and pour) during this 2-hour workshop. Tammy (teaching soap making at TLD since 1999) will demystify the process of "saponification" (soap making) coaching students in the creation of wonderful herbal soaps. Students work together to learn the entire process (from start to finish) as they create one full base batch. Students will then customize their own personal blend of color/scent using essential and/or fragrance oils (approx 3 hefty bars / 4oz each). Tammy will include safety topics and tips for home crafting and lye handling. For optimum success, Soap will sit insulated and undisturbed at the studio for 24 hours. Students plan a follow-up visit to un mold their soap or arrange to have their soap mailed. Please wear comfortable work clothes with long sleeves to class. Soap making books, ingredients, essential and fragrance oils are all available for purchase at TLD Design Center.

DYEING AND HAND PAINTING YARN SKEINS OR WARPSIn love with color and have a fondness for those expensive, luxury yarns? Knitting, weaving, crochet, embroidery and quilting all come to life with hand painted threads. Perfect class regardless of your fiber addiction. Recycle yarn and/ or create your own hand painted works . Tammy covers the basics of working with fiber-reactive dyes and provide the "recipe" at the beginning of the session. Need help with color? She will help. We supply work space and the dye. Bring your yarn, floss or sewing thread in skein form, pre-measured warps or even loose knit fabrics for unraveling. Total weight per session is 16oz. Fiber content should be bamboo, tencel, hemp, linen, cotton, rayon or silk (blends of these, okay too but, please, no acrylic, polyester, nylon, though). (*Yarn is available for purchase through the design center!) Choke ties should be looser so they don't act as a resist when the yarn is wet and swollen. Please feel free to ask Tammy about your prep prior to class. Students should wear old clothes to class and bring 1 sheet of clear or white plastic large enough to wrap each yarn put-up, a plastic tub to carry your wet plastic wrapped yarn and rubber gloves. DON'T WANT TO DYE AT HOME? REPEATERS WELCOME Various skeins of different fiber content, size and textures yarns are available for purchase in our Design Center. (please call 630-963-9573 or email to help us select a day/date that works for you) Date: SEPT 8TH
