Deck This class introduces students to the fun, unusual process of wet felting by making a thin, soft, flat felt fabric. The project may be used as a neck scarf, table runner or wall piece. Wet felting by-passes spinning and knitting (it's true! there's no knitting involved) and capitalizes on the natural attributes of animal hair fibers to bond together in the formation of a "non-woven" fabric. During Tammy's 3-hour workshop, each student will work with hand-dyed, super soft BFL wool (several handpainted, color options available) and learn how to layout yarn and wool bits for the "tapestry" surface (or choose undecorated), layer the fiber (roving), wet it and work it into their finished piece. NO KNITTING, CROCHETING OR FELTING NEEDLES are used during this process!! All materials and equipment supplied. Come ready for a soap and water work out!

Tree Bark Inspired Felt Scarf Instructor: Tammy L. Deck Beginners and seasoned felters are invited to come and experience this fun, unusual process that by-passes knitting and sewing, If you've seen this scarf in the gallery or in Tammy's booth during an art fair, she maybe labeled it as felt lace... but it's not really the same approach. Certainly some of the wet steps are similar -- if you've already taken the felt lace class -- but there's enough of a difference to warrant a separate class. Tammy demonstrated this technique on HGTV show, "That's Clever" !!
Silk (Nuno) Laminated Felt Gauze Scarf Instructor: Tammy L. Deck Click the button to see examples. Wool has a natural property that allows it to become felt when treated through agitation, moisture, pressure and heat. Wool felt is generally thick, stiff and sculptural. By using smaller quantities of wool and encouraging the fibers to pass through and bind to Silk Chiffon (referred to as laminating) a unique and surprisingly durable, drape-able felt can be created. This technique is applicable to yardages for use in clothing and hat design work. During this 4-hour class students will explore color and design direction for the application of the wool and play up the unique texture variations. A scarf will be created using a provided, hand-painted silk chiffon base, wool & metallic yarns with colored wool roving. NO KNITTING, CROCHETING OR FELTING NEEDLES are used during this process!! All materials and equipment supplied. No previous felting experience needed. There is some physical exertion** in this process so, please wear comfortable clothes and shoes to class. Some people require additional time for this project, so please bring a snack and allow for a 1 to 2 hour window beyond the stated end time. **Message from a student: "By the way, you should also market the classes as "body sculpting and toning" - I feel like I spent a day in the gym! During this 3-hour class students will explore color and design for the application of super soft Merino and/or Targhee wool to a provided, hand-painted silk satin base.NO KNITTING, CROCHETING OR FELTING NEEDLES are used during this process!! What is Felt? Felt is fabric that is made from animal hair fibers (predominantly sheep wool) that have been intertwined and tangled...and in most cases...permanently bonded together utilizing an exclusive, natural property to matt together in hot water when agitation and pressure are applied. Felt is considered the first fabric made by humans. True felt fabrics do not start out as a knit fabric...nor are they woven... crocheted or sewn...and definitely not glued! What is Nuno Felt? The name "Nuno Felt" was coined by a contemporary fiber artist by the name of Polly Sterling. The term has been adopted and used liberally...seemingly applied to any felted fabric in which starter chiffon/gauzy fabric has been enmeshed and attached somehow with the wool fibers. Another descriptive term, "Laminated Felt", more appropriately explains this fabrication technique (thin layers bonded together). All fabrics labeled "Nuno Felt" ARE NOT created the same way!! At TLD Design Center, Artist, Tammy L Deck uses this ancient method of creating fabrics with a contemporary eye, hand and process that has secured her numerous awards and acknowledgment in fiber art. The classes she teaches offer students a variety of different strategies and methods of layering, drawing, painting, sculpting and controlling the fibers for a Wet-Felted finish. Students should be prepared for periods of standing and hand manipulation in hot, soapy water in the creation of their pieces.
