SEWING / FASHION DESIGN

SEWING SKILLS - Hats & Mittens using Recycled Sweaters
Beginner Level

See Tammy's article on this technique in "Altered Couture Magazine" Nov '06

Instructor: Tammy Deck

Here's a quick, fun, green sewing project for teens and adults interested in getting started in fashion design and fiber art and artful gift giving. Each person will learn about "fulling" animal hair sweaters, pattern layout (working around defects), cutting and hand sewing using a "whip" stitch in the creation of one hat - 6 of Tammy's patterns to choose from - and one pair of mittens. Choose from our already prepared stash of recycled sweaters.

Learn about fiber content: Each student should bring 1 animal hair sweater - 75% or higher content of wool, merino, mohair, rabbit hair, angora, or cashmere on the label. Sweaters should be ready to sacrifice as you will not be using that particular sweater during the class, but rather "recycling" for one of our next classes. Sweaters with holes and spots absolutely acceptable.

Date: February 16, 2013
Meets: Sunday, Noon to 4:30pm
Fee: $60+ one sweater donation
