MASTERING AND MANIPULATING FLAT STRAW

With Jan Wutkowski of AMUSE / North Carolina & Millinery Meet-Up www.hatshatshats.com
Mastering and Manipulating Flat Straw (Jinsin, Silk Straw, Sinamay)—Contemporary hats are often created from straw that has been woven into flat yardage as opposed to traditional ‘basket-weaving’ of crowns and brims hat bodies.  Flat straws (jinsin, silk straw and sinamay, to name a few) offer unique ways of creating hat styles, most often more free-formed styles.  All these flat straws are manipulated differently, even from each other, due to the warp and weft configuration; you will learn how and why they are manipulated in such a way and how to use it to your advantage.  If you are interested in creating striking headpieces using exciting new techniques, this is the class for you.

Class Day / Date:  Saturday and Sunday May 14 and 15

Class Fee:  $250 + Flat Materials

(Prices Vary according to  selection)  Anticipate $150+/- for two hats

FIBER FUSION HAT SCULPTING & MOLDING

Learn the art of fiber fusion for the purpose of hat sculpting/making during this 2 session class. Hand-Dyed Bamboo fibers will be layered and bonded into a shimmering, permanent, paper- like fabric (water resistant). The resulting hats are lightweight, artsy and certainly one-of-a-kind. The first day is spent preparing our hat blocks, laying out the fiber, applying the bonding medium and draping/sculpting on hat blocks. We allow them to dry over night before releasing them, finishing and embellishing.

Base fiber materials and supplies provided via the class fee. Come to class with basic hand sewing skills, a crown block if you have one (optional), sewing supplies and trimming option (ribbons, flowers, buttons & beads).

**Wear old clothes to 1st class**

Class Days / Dates / Times:
Monday, May 16th 9:30am to 2:30pm & Tuesday, May 17th 3pm to 5pm
