Jinsin is a form of Bamboo found in Australia. It is an expensive millinery material to import, so it is not seen often in the USA. Jinsin can be a delicate material, so we will learn how to gently wet and steam it in order to manipulate it. I will also demonstrate how you can print on and alter the Jinsin to give it a completely different finish. Once a shape is created, we will then make it into a hat to wear.
Jinsin will be provided. Students are to bring needles, thread, pins, scissors, thimble, a variety of thread colors, a spray bottle for water and a towel.

Each student will design and make their own felted hat on a three-dimensional form. This is not a knit and shrink technique! We are exploring traditional wet felting methods using un-spun, loose fiber to create the base of the hat which allow us to include different surface design elements inlaid and imbedded in the structure. Prior experience in felt making is needed, please consider taking our Beginner's Purse class or Beginner's Flat Felt Scarf Class.

Students will learn how to work with Procion fiber reactive dyes to create one of a kind color combinations on silk fabrics and ribbon. Each student will receive a selection of fabric samples to dye and print. Students will experiment with liquid dye to create hand-painted, watercolor effects and with thickened dye to teach the process of applying imagery and printed designs. Swatches will be large enough to incorporate in hats or even French flowers made during our other millinery construction classes for completely custom, original work.
Students should wear old clothes to class and bring rubber gloves and a 38" square piece of plastic. All other tools and dye will be provided through the class fee.

Learn the art of fiber fusion for the purpose of hat making. Bamboo and/or Tencel fibers will be layered and bonded into a paper like fabric (that won't melt in water after it's dried). The resulting hats are lightweight, artsy and certainly one-of-a-kind. The first day is spent preparing our hat blocks, laying out the fiber, applying the medium and sculpting the piece on the blocks. We allow them to dry over night... so we may do our finishing techniques in the morning.
Basic fiber materials and supplies provided via the class fee. Come to class with basic hand
sewing skills, a crown block if you have one (optional) and sewing supplies and trimming
option (ribbons, flowers, buttons & beads).
Wear old clothes to 1st class.
