Once a shape is created, we will then make it into a stylish hat to wear.

Jinsin will be provided. Attendees should bring a basic sewing kit that includes needles, thread, pins, scissors, elastic, a spray bottle for water and a towel.

HAT MAKING: Fiber Fusion Hat Creations

Instructor: Tammy Deck  Click here to learn more about Tammy

Learn the art of fiber fusion for the purpose of hat making. Bamboo and/or Tencel fibers will be layered and bonded into a paper like fabric (that won't melt in water after it's dried). The resulting hats are lightweight, artsy and certainly one-of-a-kind. The first day is spent preparing our hat blocks, laying out the fiber, applying the medium and sculpting the piece on the blocks. We allow them to dry over night... so we may do our finishing techniques in the morning.

Basic fiber materials and supplies provided via the class fee. Come to class with basic hand sewing skills, a crown block if you have one (optional) and sewing supplies and trimming option (ribbons, flowers, buttons & beads).
Wear old clothes to 1st class.

Date: July 14 and 15, 2011
Meets: Thursday, 4pm to 8pm and Friday, 4pm to 8pm
Fee: $185

During Tammy's 3.5 hour workshop, each student will design and make a flat piece of felt designed to be used in a cut and sew hat creation.

Date: November 10, 2011
Meets: Thursday, 10am to 1:30pm

Hat Making: FELT HAT WORKSHOP

Instructor: Tammy Deck  Click here to learn more about Tammy

Each student will design and make their own felted hat on a three-dimensional form. This is not a knit and shrink technique! We are exploring traditional wet felting methods using un-spun, loose fiber to create the base of the hat which allow us to include different surface design elements inlaid within the structure. Prior experience in felt making is needed, please consider taking our Beginner's Purse class.

Date: November 10, 2011
Meets: Thursday, 2pm to 6pm
Fee: $70
(all materials included)

Hat Making: Blocking Wool Hoods Into Hats

Instructor: Jan Wutkowski of North Carolina

Learn the very basics of steam blocking a millinery hood over a traditional hat block. Start by learning what felt is, how it can be manipulated to form shapes, and why it is a favored millinery medium; progress to hands-on steaming, stretching, shaping, sizing and trimming techniques. Simple blocks used in class are easy to use and allow you to create many hat shapes - pillbox, cloche, fedora, and myriad free-formed shapes - all to keep you warm this winter.

Date: November 11, 2011
Meets: Friday, 9:30am to 4:30pm
Fee: $175
(all materials included)

Hat Making: The Complex Hat block: Blocking Fur Felt Hats

Instructor: Jan Wutkowski of North Carolina

Puzzled by puzzle blocks? Learn how the pieces fit together by spending a day blocking fur felt hoods on a collection of intricately carved vintage hat blocks. Class size is limited so individual attention can be given to each student; all will be encouraged to work at their own pace and skill level. More experienced milliners may choose to block over all available hat blocks while less experienced students may choose to concentrate on all aspects of blocking over a single hat block of their choice. Learn how to best shape over ‘hills and valleys’ on a block, why not all blocks are exact replicas of finished products, how to use puzzle blocks, when to use wire and other stabilizers, how to sew in petersham sweatbands, and other aspects of finishing a more complex hat shape. This is a perfect opportunity to use rare blocks and create beautifully styled winter hats.

Prior felt blocking experience is essential.

Date: November 12, 2011
Meets: Saturday, 9:30am to 4:30pm
Fee: $195
(all materials included)

Once we have blocked the wool and let it dry overnight, we will complete the hat with an assortment of embellishments to create your very own Found Object Fascinator.

Wool yardage and some found objects will be provided. Attendees should bring found objects (challenge yourself, bring something unusual), embellishments, a sewing kit that includes needles, thread, pins, scissors, elastic, a spray bottle for water and a towel.
